Hutan Harimau works through its camera archive from Sumatra's tiger forest
Hutan Harimau, Indonesian for Tiger Forest, is a conservation organisation founded in Padang in 2024 and focused on wild Sumatran tigers and their rainforest. It runs long-term camera monitoring across the Kerinci Seblat-Batanghari landscape, about 60,000 hectares of tiger habitat.
Challenge
Tigers are few and hard to see, so the cameras stay in the forest for years and their memory cards are collected by hand. Each round brings back thousands of images and videos, most of them empty.
Looking through them took most of the time the team spent on its cameras, and a backlog of cards was waiting.
Solution
The team uploads the cards to Animal Detect. Empty captures are set aside and the animals in the rest are identified, in images and in video.
Staff go through the results together and correct a label where they know the forest better than the model. The finished record is exported as a table for the team's own analysis.
