Copernicus Technologies classifies wildlife images from many camera brands

Copernicus Technologies is a Swiss company that builds tracking tags, sensors and wildlife cameras for researchers and conservation projects. Its customers follow their animals and cameras in Wonderland, the company's own software.

Challenge

Wildlife cameras connected to Wonderland send their images over the mobile network, and researchers expect a result as soon as an image arrives. The cameras come from various brands, each with its own image size, night mode and text strip.

Copernicus Technologies builds hardware and the software around it. Keeping a species model accurate for cameras of every brand, in any country, is a field of its own.

Solution

Every animal image that reaches Wonderland is sent to the Detection API in one request, whatever camera took it. Back come the species, the confidence and the position of each animal.

Classification happens as the images arrive, and researchers download the originals, annotated copies and the data behind them from Wonderland.

Results

“We use Animal Detect API to classify all animal pictures coming to our platform from various camera trap brands.”
